What is a typical day like at Barcap for you?

I get into work at around 6.50am and go to an FX morning meeting (whereby key stakeholders from the FX business chat about the market moves yesterday and what they expect for the day ahead), then I sit at my desk and check overnight emails. The morning mainly consists of speaking to clients on the phone, giving them prices, discussing their risk management strategies, giving them colour on the market etc. An afternoon may consist of a couple of client meetings or internal meetings. Throughout, I am on the phone trading with clients and assisting their pricing needs. My day typically finishes around 6.45pm.

Can you earn bonuses in years 1,2,3?

I work on average a12 hour day (market hours).

Not too bad you get used to the early mornings, although its nice to get far away from work at the end of a day.

Barcap is a meritocracy, where talent is rewarded, a “no jerk” policy, their words, not mine but to be honest its a fairly accurate description!

8 solid weeks.

Various top universities across UK and Europe.

Rigorous – I had an online application form then online testing and a phone interview. Finally there was a 2 day assessment centre involving group exercises, presentations, tests and 5 interviews with various members of the bank.

Is it easy to move into other departments?

Relatively easy I think...But I haven’t moved as I really like where I am at the moment so I am not exactly sure of the logistics.

Have you taken any professional exams?

Yes – 4 FSA exams.

Where would you like to be in 5 years time?
